Tour overview
The Yamunotri and Gangotri Dham tour packages are the most demanded packages for the Hindu devotees. These temples are the holiest shrines during the Chardham Yatra and are the first to be visited. The Yumnotri Temple is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna and it is also one of the most sacred rivers for the Hindus. The Yamuna Goddess Temple can be reached by a 6 km walk.
The Gangotri Temple is located on the banks of the Bhagirathi River. This is the next holy place in the journey of the devout Char Dham Yatra. The Gangotri Temple was built by the Nepali King Amar Singh Thapa and the actual source of the Ganges is Gaumukh on the Gangotri Glacier.
FAQs
1. When is the best time to do the Yamunotri Gangotri Yatra?
The ideal time to perform the pilgrimage is between May-June and September-October. The Char Dham shrine remains closed during the winter months due to heavy snowfall. The monsoon months (July-August) are best avoided due to landslides and road blockages.
2. Do I need a permit to participate in the pilgrimage?
The Yatra itself does not require a permit. However, you must register at a check post in Uttarakhand, either online through the Uttarakhand Char Dham Yatra Registration Portal or in person at the Yatra starting point.
3. How physically demanding is the pilgrimage?
The Yatra requires moderate trekking, especially to Yamunotri. The trek from Jankichatti to Yamunotri is about 6 km long (one way) and can be challenging for some due to the steep climb. Gangotri is accessible by road. Pony, sedan chair and porters are available for those who have difficulty walking.
4. What are the accommodation options during the yatra?
Accommodation is available in Barkot, Uttarkashi and Gangotri. Options range from budget hotels, Dharamsala and guest houses to luxury hotels. Booking in advance is recommended during peak season.
5. Is the Yatra suitable for the elderly or children?
Yes, but it is important to note that the long trek to Yamunotri can be physically demanding. Elderly people and those with health problems should consult a doctor beforehand. Pony, sedan chair and helicopter services (for Yamunotri) can be useful for older pilgrims.
6. What are the modes of transportation to the Yatra?
By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, which is about 200 km from Yamunotri and 250 km from Gangotri.
By Train: The nearest railway stations are Haridwar or Dehradun.
